What Does a Doula Do?
A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides informational support. A doula importantly provides emotional, and physical support in pregnancy, and throughout labour and birth. A doula supports both parents to advocate and understand their goals and values. They can provide continuity of support and preparation for the postpartum period, and provide breastfeeding support. The role of a doula is to support women and families in experiencing a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.
How is a Doula Different Than a Midwife?
Let’s break it down.
Midwives are experts in normal birth. They have a degree in midwifery and are healthcare providers for pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Doulas have childbirth knowledge and experience in birth. They offer ways to support you with this knowledge.
Midwives perform exams and provide clinical care for women and their babes.
Doulas offer early labour support and assist in the planning of your labour and birth plans. They can support non-medical and also holistic options with information and options and choices to consider.
Midwives offer informed consent and support
Doulas offer emotional support both during your pregnancy, labour and birth and postpartum
Midwives work in various birth settings that usually include home and hospital.
Doulas provide continuous support and provide physical support during labour. They support all birth place settings and provide support in your home
Midwives provide postpartum clinical care for you and your baby. They provide breastfeeding support
Doulas provide postpartum emotional support and resources. They provide breastfeeding support
In Canada, midwifery are covered with MSP, just like any other care provider
Some insurance plans will cover doula support.
What to Look For in a Doula
When you are meeting a doula, it is important to feel comfortable. Most doulas will offer a free consultation, and through your conversation, feeling a good fit and connection is essential. The conversation and approach should feel easy and accessible.
You might want to talk about:
- Experience and services offered when working together.
- Questions about availability and how to connect with your doula when you have any questions.
- What is the fee and is there a backup doula in the event your doula is not available during your labour and birth
- When does your doula go on-call
- How often would you meet during your pregnancy
- When would your doula join you in labour
Budget is an important factor, but consider that a professional doula is providing many hours of time and support for families. This is an investment fee and the right doula is essential to your birth and postpartum experience. Consider how much you would spend on a wedding and how you would equate that to the life event and memories during the birth of your baby. Hiring a doula will support your process in feeling empowered and prepared for that experience.
